For centuries boats were ballasted with sand, gravel, stone, or rubble to give them stability, and when they no longer needed the extra weight, it was dumped. The result was that huge quantities of ballast were shipped to new places and new continents.

With the ballast went animal and plant life of all sorts, inadvertently spread to places where they are now so well established that they are thought of as native species. And it was not unknown for ancient artefacts to be found in the ballast too, turning up in the most unexpected places.

Mats Burström är professor i arkeologi vid Institutionen för arkeologi och antikens kultur, Stockholms universitet.
Han har genom en rad studier av 1900-talslämningar och författande av en lärobok i samtidsarkeologi starkt bidragit till att etablera detta forskningsfält i Skandinavien. Mats Burströms forskning rör sig ofta i nya riktningar och visar hur lämningar som tidigare förbisetts kan få oss att se på det förflutna med nya ögon. Även bakom det till synes triviala gömmer det sig inte sällan en spännande historia.
Mats Burström är också verksam som kulturskribent. Han kopplar där gärna samman arkeologin med det utforskande av föremåls betydelse för vår förmåga att minnas som sker inom konst och litteratur.
